Google launches search translation service

Google has launched a test version of a translation tool that enables people to search the Internet in any of a dozen languages and have the results converted into their chosen tongue.

A beta version of Google’s “cross-language information retrieval” feature is online at http://translate.google.com/translate_t.

The service “in effect, will make the web universal,” Google vice president of engineering Udi Manber said while describing it to the press at the Internet search giant’s campus in Mountain View, California, last week.

“We have been working on translating all of the web to all languages,” Manber said. “The results are probably not perfect, but the information you want will be there.”

Google’s new software translates queries to perform multi-lingual searches of the Internet and then converts the results to a searcher’s language.

The languages included in the service are French, Arabic, English, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and traditional and simplified Chinese.

The service is to eventually be expanded to include other languages.

“Here at Google, part of our mission is to make the world’s information universally accessible to our users, regardless of differences such as language,” the company said in a release.

“We are happy to announce the arrival of a new cross-language search feature that allows users across the world to find and view search results on foreign language web pages in their own native language.”

the eating game

I have been vegetarian for 3 years and I think that has improved my health. Since I am a bit of an environmental freak, I feel very good about my diet in the global sense. So here I thought I was being a good little environmentalist by eating organic produce and dairy and being a good citizen of the world by buying only fair trade coffee, chocolate and tea. That is until I starting reading "Plenty", a book about a young couple who decided to eat only local food for one year. They called it the "100 km diet". The disturbing statistic that I am hearing more and more these days is that food in the Turkey. travels an average 1500 km from farm to fork, which not only hurls multitudes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, but requires a tremendous amount of packaging and treatments to make the produce travel-ready. Even more disturbing, most of the traveling food is or could easily be grown locally and thus would support local farms which are disappearing at a staggering rate. So, now on top of all of my other self-imposed dietary restrictions I am beginning to exclude food that has traveled from several city away IF it can be found locally. Shopping locally is not as difficult as it sounds, especially in the warm months in İstanbul. There are farmers markets every day of the week from June to October. Here's an example week:

Monday: Migros
Tuesday: carefor
Wednesday: Pm
Thursday: Metro
Friday: small markets
Saturday: İem
Sunday: every wear

So, how does this local diet fit in with running? Well, according to all of the nutritional advice about peak performance, the best diet is one with lots of fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy and whole grains. I'm convinced that I can get 80-90% of the foods I need at farmers markets. I may have to skip out on a clif bar and gatorade before a run, but I'll survive.

By the way, what about my two vices: coffee and wine??? Moderation. moderation. moderation.

ADRESS TO YOUTH

TURKISH YOUTH! Your first duty is to preserve and defend forever Turkish independence and the Turkish Republic.

This is the very foundation of your existence and your future. This foundation is your most precious treasure. In the future, too, there may be enemies both at home and abroad who may try to deprive you of this treasure. If one day you have to defend your independence and your Republic, you must perform your duty without regard for personal cost or the circumstances you are in. These circumstances may be extremely unfavourable. It may be that the enemies conspring against your independece and your Republic have won a victory unprecedented in the annals of world history. It may be that, through force and deception, all the fortresses of your beloved homeland are occupied, all its shipyards captured, all its armies dispersed and every part of your homeland invaded. What is more tragic and serious those who hold power in your country may be in error and misguided. They may even be traitors. Moreover, those in power may identify their personal interests with the political design of the invaders. The country may be improverished, ruined and exhausted.

Turkish Youth of the future! Even in such circumstances it is your duty to save Turkey's independences and the Turkish Republic. You will find the strength you need is already present in the noble blood that flows through your veins.
